Enough sleep important for heart health...
Getting enough sleep is key to good health, as researchers say that insufficient sleep increases therisk of serious problems, including cardiovascular disease. The team of researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) have identified a previously unknown mechanism by which sleep protects against the buildup of arterial plaques, providing a potential treatment option. Their study described the mechanism between brain, bone marrow and blood vessels, by which insufficient sleep increases inflammatory white blood cells known to be major contributors to hardening of the arteries, reports Xinhua. "We have discovered that sleep helps to regulate the production in the bone marrow of inflammatory cells and the health of blood vessels and that, conversely, sleep disruption breaks down control of inflammatory cell production, leading to more inflammation and more heart disease," said co-author Filip Swirsk.

"We have discovered that sleep helps to regulate the production in the bone marrow of inflammatory cells and the health of blood vessels and that, conversely, sleep disruption breaks down control of inflammatory cell production, leading to more inflammation and more heart disease," said co-author Filip Swirsk.
"We also have identified how a hormone in the brain known to control wakefulness controls processes in the bone marrow and protects against cardiovascular disease," Swirsk added. For the study, published in the journal Nature, the research team interrupted the sleep of mice, similar to the experience of someone constantly waking up. The sleep-deprived mice developed progressively larger arterial plaques and had twice the level of certain inflammatory cells like monocytes and neutrophils in their blood vessels. Also, they had lower amounts of a hormone called hypocretin made by the brain that regulates sleep, the researchers said. They found that the hypocretin regulated the white blood cell production through interaction with neutrophil progenitors in the bone marrow. The study showed a direct demonstration of the molecular connections linking blood and cardiovascular risk factors to sleep health.
"This is a direct demonstration that hypocretin is also an important inflammatory mediator," Swirski said. The researchers said that targeting the newly discovered mechanism could be a breakthrough that may one day lead to new treatments for heart disease and sleep disorders.
Keep your heart healthy with push-ups
Active, middle-aged men who can complete more than 40 push-ups at a time had a significantly lower risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes compared to those who did less than 10 push-ups, says a new study.
The study, published in JAMA Network Open, showed that men who are able to do more than 40 push-ups had a 96 per cent reduced risk of CVD events compared with those who were able to do less than 10 push-ups.
In addition, push-up capacity was more strongly associated with lower incidence of cardiovascular disease events than was aerobic capacity as estimated by a submaximal treadmill exercise test.
For the study, the researchers from Harvard University analysed health data from 1,104 active male firefighters whose mean age was 39.6.
During the 10-year study period, 37 CVD-related outcomes were reported.
"Our findings provide evidence that push-up capacity could be an easy, no-cost method to help assess cardiovascular disease risk in almost any setting," said lead author Justin Yang at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in the US.
The results are not generalisable to women, men of other ages or who are less active, the researchers noted.
Breast pumps may introduce harmful bacteria to babies’ gut microbiome
Using a breast pump may introduce babies to the “wrong” kind of bacteria, and perhaps increase their risk of childhood asthma.
Shirin Moossavi at the University of Manitoba, Canada, and colleagues found milk from pumps contained higher levels of potentially harmful microbes than milk straight from the breast.
“Increased exposure to potential pathogens in breast milk could pose a risk of respiratory infection in the infant,” says Moossavi. This might explain why infants fed pumped milk are at increased risk for paediatric asthma compared with those fed exclusively at the breast, she says.
Exactly how bacteria become established in the infant gut is unclear. Microbes from the mother carried in breast milk is one probable route, but so is the transfer of mouth bacteria from the mouth of a sucking baby.
Breast pumps offer a third, artificial pathway – one that can potentially transmit a range of environmental bacteria to the baby.
Harmful pathogens For the study, the researchers looked for bacterial genes in breast milk samples from 393 healthy mothers three to four months after giving birth.
The team found the bacterial content of milk being fed to the mothers’ babies differed greatly from infant to infant.
Milk administered from breast pumps contained higher levels of potentially harmful “opportunistic pathogens”, such as those from the genus Stenotrophomonas and family Pseudomonadaceae.
In contrast, direct breastfeeding without a pump was associated with microbes typically found in the mouth, as well as greater bacterial richness and diversity. This suggests infant mouth microbes play an important role in determining what kind of bacteria are found in mothers’ milk.
“This study considerably expands our understanding of the human milk microbiota and the factors that might influence it,” says study co-author Meghan Azad at the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba. “The results will inspire new research about breastfeeding and human milk, especially related to pumping.”

International Childhood Cancer Day: Theme and Significance of
Day for Awareness of Cancer in Kids
15th February is observed as the International Childhood Cancer Day (ICCD) every year since 2002. Childhood Cancer International (CCI) initiated the observance of this day. Working towards the goal of reducing childhood cancer mortality and the suffering related to cancer suffering, CCI functions with its partners predominantly WHO and SIOP. The increasing global burden of childhood cancer is only increasing and to help create awareness towards it, CCI works collectively globally with a network of 171 member organisations in 88 countries. Childhood Cancer Survivors May Experience Sleep Problems as Adults, Says Study.
Significance of International Childhood Cancer Day (ICCD) With the aim of eliminating the mortality rate, pain and sufferings of the children having cancer, this day is an observance of collective efforts of various organisations to help reach the aim. The aim is to achieve an increased rate of survival for all children having cancer, without any discrimination based on the financial background. By 2030 the aim is to meet at least 60 percent of this goal. On International Childhood Cancer Day efforts are made towards increasing awareness and reaching out to maximum numbers of children having cancer. The goal is to bring up childhood cancer as a global health priority.
Theme of International Childhood Cancer Day (ICCD) With the aim of standing unanimously against childhood cancer and achieve the WHO Global Childhood Cancer Target Goals, the theme this year is "No More Pain" and "No More Loss" for children, survivors and their families. The themes suggest that strict and urgent steps need to be taken to fight Childhood Cancer. Spread awareness for early detecting, giving easy access to access life-saving essential medicines and right to treatment without pain are a few points the theme is set to make.
Every year over 300000 children are diagnosed with cancer, and the worst part is that 8 out of these 10 children come from lower to the middle class with minimum or almost no financial support to provide the child with quality treatment. On this day we must all join hands to support the cause.
Valentine’s Day 14th feb 2019!
Valentine’s Day, the holiday of love and romance, is almost here. On February 14, children and adults alike will shower their friends and loved ones with gifts that range from cards with endearing messages to chocolates, long-stemmed red roses, fine jewelry and much more.
It is a day that comes around once a year and is usually touted as a big corporate scheme. But Valentine’s Day is way more than just a Hallmark holiday. Valentine’s Day was first introduced to Japan in 1936 and has become widely popular. However, because of a translation error made by a chocolate company, only women buy Valentine chocolates for their spouses, boyfriends, or friends. In fact, it is the only day of the year many single women will reveal their crush on a man by giving him chocolate. The men don’t return the favor until White Day, a type of “answer day” to Valentine’s Day, which is on March 14.
Valentine's Day should, instead, be a reminder to focus on what we have, as opposed to what's missing. It can warn us that comparisons are dangerous, especially when we're comparing ourselves to some idealized relationship that cannot exist. Not for us; not for anyone.
Love is about acceptance. It's about adjusting our expectations and not demanding perfection, or even seeking it. Love is about noticing what's good and nurturing it, as well as noticing what needs repair and attending to it.
Happy Kiss Day 2019: How You Can Express Your Love For Your BelovedA kiss is a meeting of the two in a moment in which there is nothing else besides them, and nothing else matters. Like a hug, a kiss is a pure expression of love and affection.
On Kiss Day, that falls on February 13- a day before the Valentine's Day, couples kiss each other to express their adoration for each other. Valentine's Week that began on February 7 with Rose Day has been a celebration of love for the couples.
During the course of the week, they surprise each other with gifts, a teddy, a chocolate or a date and also do little or grand things that celebrate their journey of love. They make promises; some also find courage to propose their love interests while others simply shower their partner with hugs and kisses. Overall, it's all about celebrating the lovers and everyone does it their way! Happy Kiss Day 2019!
Happy Hug Day 12th Feb 2019 The fifth day of Valentine's week is celebrated as Hug Day. When words fall short, a hug speaks a thousand of them. This week is not only for lovers or couples. A hug is a handshake from the heart. So always remain close to my heart and best wishes on this hug day.
When your child is fussy about food It is common to hear complaints about certain foods, such as “My stomach hurts if I eat lactose or dairy products.”or “I don’t eat fish. It makes me feel nauseous.” Both children and adults may suffer from such disorders and are very selective about food intake. This can result in malnutrition and lack of energy.
Such eating disorder is called Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). In most of the cases, the children develop fussy eating habits due to certain aversions or irregular feeding habits. For instance, if a child grows up without eating fish, his or her taste buds will not be ready to taste fish later. The body will be deprived of certain nutrients found in fish. https://bit.ly/2V7jVOn
ARFID often results in restrictive food habits based on the colour, taste, smell or shape of the food. It causes dependence on particular foods, lack of nutrition, weight loss and stunted growth. The disorder also affects children’s social behaviour.
Patients with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) or those with autism also show excessive selectiveness in food intake.
Parents have to be consciously active from the very beginning to avoid such disorders in children. Parents can introduce children to different foods with various colours, tastes and shapes. They must not say anything negative about any food in front of their kids.
Parents should not give in to children’s tantrums regarding food habits. They should try to feed them varieties of foods. If restrictive habits increase the child must be taken to a physician or a psychologist. Before starting any treatment, he or she should be diagnosed to identify if the disorder is ARFID or OCD

Train your brain to form good habits
You need to train your brain by repeating actions until they stick, a new study suggests.
The researchers have created a model which shows that forming good (and bad) habits depends more on how often you perform an action than on how much satisfaction you get from it.
"Psychologists have been trying to understand what drives our habits for over a century, and one of the recurring questions is how much habits are a product of what we want versus what we do," said Amitai Shenhav, assistant professor at Brown University.

Type-2 diabetes: Make this one simple food swap to reduce blood sugar levels
More than 3.7 million people in the UK suffer from type-2 diabetes, a condition that causes the level of sugar in the blood to increase. When you have high blood sugar levels, your body still breaks down carbohydrate from your food and drink, but turns it into glucose.
There are a number of ways to reduce type-2 diabetes symptoms, including what food and drink you consume.
A small snack will not have a big effect on your blood glucose level. Swapping snacks is an easy way to eat better while enjoying the foods you like.So if you’re a huge savoury fan, you can exchange your packet of crisps for plain popcorn with added spices or cinnamon.Or, instead of bread and chips, why not opt for carrots and celery with salsa or low-fat hummus?
Alternatively, look out for the following symptoms: 1. Excessive thirst: Feeling constantly thirsty is one of the most common symptoms of diabetes. It's usually coupled with dryness in the mouth and can be one of the first signs to develop. 2. Slow healing: The disease makes healing more difficult due to high blood glucose levels. 3. Insatiable hunger: A sudden increase in appetite, particularly sweet cravings, can also be a symptom of the condition. This is because of the really high or really low blood sugar levels. 4. Sleep issues: People with diabetes often experience problems getting to sleep and remaining asleep. This can be caused by pain, discomfort, the need to urinate, Restless Leg Syndrome, and sleep apnea.
5. Skin issues: You might experience skin dryness and itchiness or darkening of the skin (acanthosis nigricans). This is due to circulation problems.

But his message clashed with the rancorous atmosphere he has helped cultivate in the nation's capital, as well as the desire of most Democrats to block his path during his next two years in office.
