Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that Malaysia needed an improved Ocean governance regime that would be bringing all the maritime related agencies together and help in the better enforcement of their actions. He said that there was a need in the country for reviewing the management of the all the maritime related agencies spread over the vast sea areas and the other marine resources.
While addressing at the National Maritime Conference at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2019, he addressed saying that over the past years Malaysia as a nation had matured quiet a lot and at least 15 Acts and Orders were passed for managing the maritime issues.
Malaysia has been concerned over the maritime issues for quiet sometime and probably after the views and opinions of the Prime Minister some productive steps could be planned for making the Maritime agencies meet together under a common platform so that they can work for the better enforcement of laws and decisions.
The enforcement of the new laws were placed on more than 10 ministries and about 31 maritime related agencies that had very overlapping jurisdictions. Such a jurisdiction only led to the inefficient use of the resources that gave very poor outputs as well.
The Maritime security of Malaysia was highly challenged by the nontraditional form of threats including illegal trafficking on both humans and also goods. Some of the other major forms of concerns included the threats to the ecosystem of Malaysia including change of the climate and also the global warming, unregulated fishing and terrorism could not be excluded too. The pollution caused by the shipping and land based activities were also among the major cause of concern.
The Prime Minister said that the forum would help in assisting the government for identifying the important and threatening issues and also the issues that needed special attention from the government.
